Photographer #096: Josef Hoflehner

Josef Hoflehner, Austria, 1955, is a landscape photographer. Josef shoots black and white images traveling all over the world from Dubai to China and from the USA to Iceland. He has a large number of books published throughout his career. In 2009 his book Jet Airliner came out. Bizarre photographs of airplanes flying over people and streets while landing at St. Maartens, Dutch West Indies. Also in 2009 a book called China was published. The following images are from the series Jet Airliner, China and California.

Photographer #094: Richard Mosse

Richard Mosse, Ireland, 1980, finds beauty in things that are broken and in a state of decay. He went to Iraq where he made his series Breach and Nomads. He approaches the objects as sculptures instead of acts of war and drama. He has done the same in his series The Fall, where he travelled across the globe to photograph crashed airplanes. In the project Infra, he left for Congo to take images with infrared film. The images are not digitally manipulated. The following images come from Infra, The Fall and Nomads.

Photographer #082: Kevin O'Connell

Kevin O'Connell, 1958, is an American photographer who's main interest lies with machinery of energy development. His photographs consist of pumps, tanks, towers, wind turbines and pylons. Although there is a certain beauty in these machines and objects, it also raises questions about how we deal with our horizon and environment. These machines will one day break down and decay, but they will leave scars on the environment. O'Connell asks himself various questions, one of them is; What is the fate of the horizon? The following images come from the series Conventional Entropy, Everything Comes Broken and Big Burn.

Photographer #081: Peter Bialobrzeski

Peter Bialobrzeski, 1961, is a German photographer with an impressive number of books published in the last several years. In 2009 two books were released. One of them was Paradise Now, which deals with how we treat nature in these times of urban growth. The other is Case Study Homes about urban structures in shantytowns. In 2007 his book Lost in Transition came out, where he examines the transformations of urban wastelands in 28 different cities all over the world. The following images come from these three books.

Photographer #077: Ambroise Tezenas

French photographer Ambroise Tezenas, 1972, has won various awards for his photographic work. Currently he is working on a large series called Dark Tourism. He travels to places where as a tourist you can visit sites where disaster has taken place. Examples are; the Sichuan Wenchuan Earthquake Ruins tour, where you can visit the southwestern area of China where 90000 people were killed during the earthquake, or Prypiat, the town that became a ghosttown after the Chernobyl disaster.

In 2007 his book Beijing: Theatre of the People came out about the Hutongs of Beijing and their downfall. These traditional blocks of Beijing with small alleys had to move for new large buildings with giant boulevards.

Photographer #073: Ferit Kuyas

Ferit Kuyas', Turkey, 1955, latests book Chongqing, City of Ambition was released in 2009. It is a series of photographs on one of the largest cities in the world, Chongqing, China. It is the city where his parents-in-law live. He stayed in the city that counts 32 million inhabitants on various occasions where he focused on the periphery of the city where the enormity might not be seen but rather felt. There is a natural haze in his images (although intensified by pollution). He feels the city is a metaphor for the current developments in China. The following images come from the series City of Ambition, Chinese Smokers and Shanghai Memories.

Photographer #070: Hans van der Meer

Dutch photographer Hans van der Meer, 1955, has been a professional photographer since the 1970's. In 1995 he started taking pictures of low division amateur football games. This resulted in books as Keepers and Dutch Fields. After covering the Dutch football fields, he moved on to the rest of Europe. These images were released in the book European Fields which came out in several languages. It has become a large archive of landscape photographs.

Photographer #067: Cole Thompson

Cole Thompson, USA, 1954, is a photographer who, since 2004, only shoots digitally. He collects various images to become one coherent portfolio. Examples are a series of photographs called Harbinger in which every picture consists of one single cloud in the sky. Another example is the project Ceiling Lamps. Cole photographed a large number of ceiling lamps from beneath, images of strange and abstract forms. The following photographs come from the series Ceiling Lamps, Harbinger and The Lone Man.

Photographer #062: Alejandro Chaskielberg

Alejandro Chaskielberg, Argentina, 1977, started as a photojournalist. After completing his photographic studies he worked on various documentaries as a director for television. By using fictional scenarios and playing with sharpness he has developed his own style in photography. He searches for the limits of documentary photography and water is a recurring theme in his projects. The following photographs come from the projects The High Tide, Nocturama and Borders.

Photographer #058: Jan Koster

Dutch photographer Jan Koster, 1959, mainly focuses on the Dutch landscapes and has done so since the early 1990's. He first got recognised with his series Riverscapes. He presents his projects as books, which he publishes himself only to revise and improve them. The projects keep growing and thus becomes a vast archive of the variety, similarity and uniqueness of the Dutch landscapes.

Dutchscapes is a project that shows the coastal landscapes of the Netherlands with aesthetic images and was published as a book by Episode publishers in 2009.

Apart from the landscapes for which Koster is known, he has also focused on other parts of the world. The following images come from his series Havana.

Photographer #042: David Burdeny

David Burdeny, Canada, 1968, is an award winning photographer. He is well known for his black and white photographs of landscapes taken in near dark situations. Due to the long exposures the images show something not able to be seen by the normal eye. Burdeny has no degree in photography, but a background in architecture and interior design.

In 2007 he made an impressive series on Greenland and Antarctica.

Photographer #035: Nadav Kander

Nadav Kander, Israel, 1961, lives and works in London. He is a photographer with a vast amount of projects behind his name. In a three year period he has gone upstream the Yangtze River in China documenting the development and economic rise of China and it's concequences. He was awarded the Prix Pictet in 2009 for this series.

Nadav has also photographed the entire administration of Barack Obama. The New York Times published the photographs, making it the largest collection of photographs ever published in the Times by one single photographer.

Photographer #008: Thomas Kneub�hler

Swiss born photographer Thomas Kneub�hler, 1963, now living in Montreal, Canada, was fascinated by the mountains full of light that made night skiing possible. He made the surreal landscapes his subject matter. Night photography of mountains that radiate. He calls this series Electric Mountains.

Earlier he worked on a project called Office 2000. Again a landscape arises of surrealism, although it is very real. The pictures become abstract objects of repetition.

Photographer #007: David Maisel

David Maisel, 1961, from the U.S.A is most known for his photography from the air. He takes photographs of landscapes with a fascination for the deterioration of the earth. For decades he has been photographing copper mines. However from the air they become more like abstract paintings.

In 2005 and 2006 he was triggered by copper again, but now in a different way. He found hundreds of copper canisters that hold the remains of patients from a psychiatric hospital that have never been claimed. Time, the ashes on the inside and other conditions have changed the canisters into unique masterpieces.
