People Got A Lotta Nerve
When I heard about the recent Sea World incident, I immediately thought of the song "People Got A Lotta Nerve" from Neko Case's brilliant album, Middle Cyclone. Here is the video by Julie and Paul Morstad. You know they call them killer whalesBut you seem surprisedWhen it pinned you down to the bottom of the tankWhere you can't turn aroundIt took half your leg and both your lungsAnd I craved I

Birdfeeders and Evolution
Domesticated was born largely from my interest in evolution after reading The Beak of the Finch: A Story of Evolution in Our Time. I became fascinated with the concept of evolution in real-time and wanted to explore the grander implications of subtle and gradual human interventions within ecosystems. We tend to think to think of evolution as something that has happened in the past. We see the

Deer Swims Across Hudson River to Escape Jersey City
I want to make this image:A wayward deer is on its way back to the wild after an urban adventure that saw it roam through downtown Jersey City, leap into the Hudson and swim to Governor's Island. New York television station WABC-7 reported the deer made its way on to the rocks at Governor's Island before police caught up to it and tranquilized it.A Jersey City police spokesman said the department

Evolution in Real Time
Struggle Amy SteinA story in yesterday's New York Times points to a study that concludes, "human actions are increasing the rate of evolutionary change in plants and animals in ways that may hurt their long-term prospects for survival." Basically, many of our attempts at conservation have run counter to the natural order of habitat. We have focused hunting and fishing regulations to allow for

After a three week stint as the best seller on the photo-eye bookstore list, my book has stumbled all the way to number two. So, which photography heavyweight ended the Domesticated dynasty? Eggleston? Parr? Strauss? Nope. I was knocked down a peg by Jessica Lange. Hey, I loved her in King Kong, but come on... Hmmm, I just took a peek at her work and it's not bad. Kinda okay in fact.
